Waymo Unveils New Robotaxi with Streamlined Technology for Faster Deployment

Alphabet-owned Waymo has unveiled details about its latest “generation 6” self-driving technology, which will be integrated into Geely Zeekr electric vehicles. This new technology is designed to operate in a broader range of weather conditions while reducing reliance on expensive cameras and sensors.

During a visit to Waymo’s Mountain View, California, garage, Satish Jeyachandran, Waymo’s Vice President of Engineering, expressed confidence that the new generation of robotaxis could be brought to market more quickly than previous versions. He attributed this acceleration to advances in machine learning and semiconductor performance.

Waymo, which launched its commercial robotaxi service in 2018, has previously outfitted its driverless systems in Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans and Jaguar I-PACE electric SUVs. As the company scales its Waymo One service in cities like San Francisco, Phoenix, Austin, and Los Angeles, it is also preparing to introduce these new Zeekr-based robotaxis.

Currently, Waymo provides approximately 50,000 paid driverless rides weekly, mainly in San Francisco and Phoenix. The company recently opened up its service in San Francisco to all users after dropping its waitlist. Since its inception, Waymo has completed over 2 million trips.

Alphabet has committed an additional $5 billion to Waymo’s expansion, focusing on scaling its operations and integrating the new generation of robotaxis into its fleet. The new Waymo-Zeekr vehicles, which feature a boxier design and a roomier interior, are expected to coexist alongside the existing Jaguar I-PACE SUVs. The Zeekr’s design includes a low step, high ceiling, and increased legroom, making it more accessible to a wider range of riders.
