Microsoft Investigates Windows Activation Issues After Closing Key Loophole

Microsoft is currently investigating reports of Windows activation problems that seem to be connected to the company’s recent action to prevent Windows 7 and Windows 8 keys from activating Windows 10 and Windows 11 copies. Users who upgraded to Windows 10 or 11 for free from Windows 7 or 8 might face deactivation issues if they modify hardware components or update their BIOS version.

Several users, including a Verge reader who filed a complaint with the FTC, have reported problems with Windows activation after hardware changes. Microsoft closed a long-standing activation loophole that allowed users to install Windows 10 or 11 and use a Windows 7 or 8 key for activation. The recent block affects reactivation due to hardware changes, even though altering hardware is not a violation of the Windows license.

Microsoft acknowledges these reports and is actively investigating the matter. Users experiencing technical difficulties are advised to contact customer support for assistance.
