Meta Acquires Threads.com Domain for Expanding Threads Social Network

Meta has officially acquired the Threads.com domain name, according to updated Whois records on September 24. The domain transfer was first spotted by domain-related forums, and TechCrunch confirmed that Meta’s Instagram is now listed as the registrant of Threads.com.

The acquisition is notable as Meta initially launched its social networking platform Threads on the Threads.net domain due to the original Threads.com being owned by a Sequoia-backed team communication startup, also called Threads. In June, Shopify acquired Threads.com, but details of the sale were not disclosed at the time.

Meta has yet to comment on whether it plans to shift its Threads social network to the new Threads.com domain. The company’s social platform Threads has scaled rapidly, amassing over 200 million users since its launch last year.

Previously, the Threads.com team revealed that multiple companies approached them about acquiring the domain after Meta’s social network went live. Initially, the startup declined offers but later decided to sell, citing excitement about joining a place where they could scale innovation faster.

As of now, Shopify has not responded to requests for further details regarding the domain sale. The Threads.com domain saw a spike in activity and app downloads when Meta launched its social platform, further fueling interest in the domain acquisition.
