BYJU’s Aakash Layoffs Hit 100 Employees in India

BYJU’s Aakash Layoffs Hit 100 Employees in India

Aakash, a BYJU’s-owned edtech company, has laid off approximately 100 employees as part of a strategic restructuring effort. The move comes as AESL looks to align its operations with broader business goals under its parent company, BYJU’s.

The layoffs were confirmed in an internal communication, where the company stated that the decision was driven by the need to optimize resources and focus on sustainable growth. This development follows a series of layoffs at BYJU’s and its subsidiaries as the education technology giant continues to navigate financial and operational challenges.

A spokesperson for Aakash mentioned that the restructuring is part of the company’s long-term strategy to streamline operations and enhance its core offerings in the highly competitive edtech market. The company assured that it will provide necessary support to affected employees during the transition.

Aakash, a leading provider of test preparation services, has been a crucial asset for BYJU’s since it was acquired for $1 billion in 2021. However, like many companies in the edtech space, AESL is facing mounting pressure to maintain profitability amid changing market dynamics and the shifting demand for online and offline learning solutions.

The layoffs at Aakash reflect a broader trend in the edtech sector, where companies are reassessing their business models and reducing costs in response to post-pandemic market conditions. BYJU’s, the parent company, has faced its own set of financial challenges, including downsizing efforts and delayed payments to creditors.

Despite these layoffs, Aakash emphasized that it remains committed to providing quality educational services to students across India, particularly in the test preparation segment, and that the strategic realignment will help the company continue to innovate and adapt to the evolving educational landscape.
